Students are welcome to come to the library during study periods to read, research, or use the computers. It is important for each student to sign in and arrive with a pass.
The library is a GUM FREE ZONE.
We ask all patrons to keep voices down when in the library in order to maintain a quiet environment for those reading, doing research or studying.
The School Libraries: Learning for Life artwork at left by Liza Hanson '12 recieved an Honorable Mention in the 2009 Massachusetts School Library Association annual bookmark contest.
Mission:
Bishop Feehan's Library Media Center, located on the first floor of Mercy Hall, strives to be a welcoming environment for the entire Feehan community, providing both students and faculty with the best resources available to promote a positive and effective learning experience. It supports the philosophy and curriculum of the school and assumes a major role in helping students acquire the research and critical thinking skills to function effectively in today's world. The library staff regularly collaborate with other faculty to help integrate information skills into class projects. The Library Media Center aims to nurture the whole person, helping students transform into lifelong learners.
Resources:
The library holdings include a fiction and non-fiction collection of close to 10,000 books available to students via an automated card catalog. In addition, there are more a dozen periodicals including Newsweek, Sport Illustrated, America: the National Catholic Weekly, and Consumer Reports. Video tapes and DVDs are also available for faculty use.
In our new location the library hosts one technology classroom and one traditional classroom available for all faculty. Faculty often reserves the library for class or research purposes, and trained full time library staff actively assist with these projects. There are also two 6 person meeting rooms available to staff and students for small group projects. Rooms can be reserved at the library's Circulation Desk.
The library offers an active electronic environment. With wireless access throughout, students and faculty can use their own laptops anywhere in the library. Eighteen desktop computers are available to students at any time, while teachers have access to another 26 plus Smart Board in the Library Technology Lab. In addition, over 30 laptops are available for students & faculty to check out on a daily basis. These computers, with Internet access, Microsoft Office programs, black & white, as well as color printing options, are open to the community before, during, and after school.
State and Diocese-wide electronic databases including 14 new ABC/CLIO History databases, Thomson-Gale's Opposing Viewpoints, EBSCO's Literary Reference Center, and eLibrary enhance the school collection both from school and home. The library also actively maintains webpages on Edline and Moodle. As information needs within the school community arise, the library works to incorporate new materials in various formats.
